搶聽 CD: Love Never Dies

Dare not listen the CD for too many times, especially at night. I remember the first time I listened to The Phantom, I lost my mind like Christine Daae. Chinese says 繞樑三日, The Phantom of the Opera definitely at least 繞樑十日. The music carries magic. The angle of music sings right next to you... in your room.... in sleep he sang to you... (wahhahahah)
Back to Love Never Dies. When I got the news about this musical first thing I did was to read the story Wiki. Crap story I concluded, but regret now. Probably because emotionally i was not able to accept the fact that after "All I ask of you", Christine would admit she was actually in love with another man just a few days before singing that song.
After listening to "Beneath a moonless sky", I forgive her (haha).
I did read the book but from the Musical ifself, previously, Phantom was a "pity creature in the darkness". He's selfish. He's crazy. His love was narrow. Now from this new musical, you will find the fact that, he's the one who knows how to love, with his limiations.
The song also explained the "strange duet" in the Phantom of the Opera. In case if you were in doubt before -- then yes, that's sex. The mysterious super high note sang by Christine... well. haha. I was too stupid didn't realize that. Now when I look back, it was so obvious!
Some great pieces in this musical. I love the hit songs "'Til I hear you sing" by Phantom, and of course "Love never dies" by Christine. Another little songs worth noting are "Look with your heart" and the previously mentioned "Beneath a Moonless sky". "Devil Take the Hindmost" is a very good quartet as well.
However -- I don't like the fact that this musical has reused too much of the melody and themes from the Phantom of the Opera. Of course they want to make it consistent -- but Andrew Lloyd Webber himself IS THE CONSISTENCY. We don't need the repeating themes! I am seriously a bit impatiant with the "Little Lotte" theme. It's enough to have it in the Opera!
To me, the whole musical is written under the shadow of the Phantom of the Opera. It's 無可厚非but the strange thing is: I hear a strong sense of another 2 musicals in this CD! I won't say it's a copy cat -- even if it is, it's just Webber copying Webber, what can I say -- but sounds like putting a few of his work together. Webber - this part doesn't earn my respect to you!
The first musical is: Sunset Boulevard. This is a very old musical now no long showing in the west end nor the boardway. The main character is an old out dated singer called Norma Desmond. She was a dominate, crazy, desperate, lonely woman with strong love and hate. Madame Giry is simply another Norma in Love Never Dies.
The second musical is: The woman in White. I watched it in London and it's so crap that I discourage anyone watching it on stage - unless you really dunno how to spend a nite in London. The ghosty and mentally disorder theme was around Meg throughout Love never dies. How come Meg has such a complicated character?..... Maybe it's just me who cannot emotional accept this since I really love Meg singing "Where in this world, have you been hiding? Really you were, perfect!" in the Opera.
Good musical. Worth listening/ watching. Don't miss my recommended songs.
